Before I send it…
The sketchbook is due to be postmarked on the 10th, to be included in a show in Georgia at the end of the month. I’ve been done with it for a couple weeks now, and happy to be on to new projects, but I thought I’d give a little encore of some of the highlights now that it has to be sent out. My personal favorites: the greenhouse effect becomes a sorority toga party (complete with red dixie cups), fossil fuels become a tenant of Buddhism, pollution becomes endless knitting (appropriate for the craze that has overtaken the Spiz, thanks to Derya’s efforts), and war becomes a Japanese treat. Also, I was shocked that a four letter word like guns could have an anagram for every letter (snug, nugs, gnus, sung). All four give me a warm fuzzy feeling, so it was hard to choose the one to illustrate.
In the end, I was happy with the outcome and no longer feel like the project was a waste of time. I owe a lot to this little book, for helping me remember what it feels like to be in the rhythm of making art…a lot of new ideas came to me while I was otherwise “occupied” with this, and I don’t think that that is a coincidence. Work begets work.
So without further ado (as per usual, click on the images to enlarge for maximum anagram readability):
And, fuck it, I’ve decided that, contrary to my previous feelings, there isn’t anything that is “too hot” for the blog. So here’s the Mayan Calendar anagram:

Very cool idea and very well done. Comic relief! Light in dark places! Nice job.

Your book is beautiful! As a book artist I have to respond to your earlier entry where you said you were frustrated that the drawings were trapped in bound form and could not be displayed all at once. Part of the beauty of the piece is the intimacy of it, and I’m sure the experience of the piece in person–holding it and being drawn inside–is an amazing experience that photos or two-dimensional paintings could never reproduce. I can imagine you sitting all crouched and consterned as you do, thinking so furiously about the letters and what they can make. And, I love the way the previous images bleed through and become part of each subsequent page spread. If you ever cut this up to display it as separate pieces I will disown you!

Arielle - I think this is one of my favorites, so far. I see it as one of your more personal works, indeed. It encompasses a lot of you, and you right now. It’s a beautiful illustration of the things that scare you, that threaten this world, yet your wit, creativity and intense thinking prevail. I am impressed at your ability to expand here…in so many directions.
Personal favorites? Overpopulation = MJ = LOVE. Greenhouse Effect certainly tickles me and there is something about Mayan Calendar = creamy and anal that is just…just what I needed. And, above all, I am so happy for you that at the end of this project, you came out on top. I know you had your blocks and frustrations and maybe even doubts…so props to you for prevailing, yet again.
