Remembrance of things past
I received a box today containing more fragments displaced in the dismantling of my childhood room. This photo-booth strip was amongst them.

This evidence of my parents willingly entering a tiny, enclosed space together seems from another life, an alternate universe. They look young and happy. I wonder, were they happy then?
I realize now that I have long thought of them as two floating, separate entities; myself and my siblings being the only link between them (perhaps we chose the both of them, in some time before our little minds could record, much to their dismay.) But no, this picture is a startling reminder that it did not happen that way at all. They chose one another, and our creation was merely the welcome byproduct of their union.

yes, your mother and I chose one another, our love was genuine, and we rejoiced in having you. we were happy and young hamming it up with our precious toddler in the photo booth. an authentic moment captured. reflect, and give it prominence in the slideshow of your life.

I am sure you’ve been told this before, but your dad (at least in those photos) looks like Albert Brooks.
